There is nothing I love more than a fuss about nothing. Attach anything mundane to a hashtag, and a cacophony of typed responses will form your tragic chorus. The responses will be surprising, creative and sometimes profoundly hilarious. People may say that this is a symptom of a bored and shallow generation of people glued to their smartphones, but surely it is our capacity for innovation that is truly striking.
When a student from my university enraged the Twittersphere by appearing on University Challenge wearing a leather vest, I knew I was the woman to write a feature length article on #vestgate in our student newspaper. I stood firmly on the side of irony - praising both Kaamil's commitment to the vest, and the media's decision to treat the event with such gravitas.
